GoVid for YouTube (formerly Go for YouTube) is a straightforward macOS app that promises to be the fastest way between you and your favorite YouTube videos by taking them out of your browser and onto your Mac’s desktop.

In a few words, GoVid for YouTube is a menu bar application for the Mac that enables you to access YouTube without the having to use your default web browser.

Once you have clicked the GoVid for YouTube’s menu bar icon, you will be greeted by a simplistic floating window that embeds the classic YouTube interface.

This means that you can interact with YouTube or your account in exactly the same way as you would with a normal web browser. Another useful feature is GoVid for YouTube’s ability to pause any running video when the app window is minimized and resume it instantly when it is activated again.

GoVid for YouTube enables you to run it from both menu bar and the Dock, to control its opacity levels, to change the font size, record hotkeys, and has even got fullscreen support.

Almost to good to be true you may be thinking, and you would be right in think so, because, unfortunately, this app has one major downside: it doesn’t support YouTube’s latest HTML5 based player.

This means that you will have to install Adobe Flash Player on your Mac, and this, in turn, means that you should also be prepared to have your Mac’s processing resources seriously tested.

While the concept behind GoVid for YouTube is a very good one, when it comes to overall stability and performance, the app struggles a bit in the real world. But, it may prove itself very useful for Mac users who need instant access to YouTube and don’t really watch videos at 720p or 1080p quality.

Taking all things into consideration, GoVid for YouTube is an interesting app with a good concept behind it, and you should give it a try and see if it suits your needs. If that isn’t the case, no harm done, you will continue to watch YouTube videos exactly as before.
