Suspend background tabs is an experimental Firefox and SeaMonkey add-on that will save some CPU (battery) time and make the browser more responsive.
Suspend background tabs delays actions in background tabs until they become active again.
At the moment, Suspend background tabs will only suspend periodical actions happening in background tabs, these will only be resumed when the tab becomes active again.
Big downloads in background tabs are unaffected by the current version, as are videos or Flash.
Therefore, some websites will still manage to make your browser slow despite being in background but that should be far less common now.
Suspend background tabs is cross-platform and it works on Mac OS X, Windows and Linux.
