Most people have entirely given up on watching movies and TV shows on DVDs, Blu-rays and on TV nowadays in favor of the now ubiquitous video streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime.
Despite all of these offering built-in subtitles for most of their video content, there still are some cases when you need a custom subtitle: when the streaming service does not provide subs in your language, when the supplied caption is not correctly synced, or, the worst possible scenario, when there is no subtitle whatsoever.
In such situations, you can use an app such as Caption, a cross-platform and open source subtitle finder and downloader. This utility is specifically designed to make it as straightforward as possible to download subtitles on to your Mac and use them with your favorite video streaming service or with any movie or TV show episode on your hard drive.
Caption comes with a minimalist user interface which enables you to find a subtitle for the movie or episode you want to watch by either entering its name in the text field at the top of the window or by drag and dropping the video file onto its main screen.
When drag and dropping, Caption will take over for you by auto-renaming and auto-downloading the subtitle so that you can go straight to watching your movie / TV episode.
Once the search results are displayed, you can download any caption you want by double-clicking its entry. Caption then requires you to choose a download destination and to choose a name for the subtitle you want to download.
At the moment Caption allows you to search for subtitles on the OpenSubtitles and Addic7ed caption hosting platforms, with plans to add more in the future. Also, because the app is open source, you can also add support for extra subtitle sources on your own, if you have the necessary programming skills.
Regarding the testing period, Caption worked almost flawlessly throughout all of it, with a few noticeable bugs we encountered: at times, the Caption utility does not allow you to drag and drop videos onto its window if it already displays results for captions found using the text field, and it will download the wrong subtitle when drag and dropping a movie / TV episode with a lot of sub results.
In a nutshell, if you need a simple way to rapidly find and download the correct captions for a movie or TV show you want to watch, give Caption a try as it will most definitely make your life easier.
