The download function integrated within your default web browser usually uses a single connection for the transfers, which translates into longer processing times. Bitsorb is a minimalist OS X application that can setup up to 8 different threads for the same download in order to improve the download speed.
When first launching Bitsorb for the first time on your Mac, OS X's Gatekeeper might warn you that the app cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. In order to bypass this, you will have to right click Bitsorb, choose "Open" and then click the "Open" button on the dialog that will ask you to confirm if you want to open it. A tutorial detailing this Gatekeeper bypassing procedure is also available on the developer's website.
For your convenience, Bitsorb enables you to access its interface by clicking its small status bar icon. The window remains active until you decide to close, hide or minimize it.
At the same time, the Bitsorb menulet icon also provides details about the download speed expressed in bits per second.
To start using the Bitsorb download accelerator, drag and drop the URL on top of the app’s Dock or status bar icon, or use the built-in “Add Download” button. The utility will scan the link and then enables you to actually start the process.
To avoid taking too much of your bandwidth, Bitsorb enables you to either pause certain transfers or to add some links to the download later list from the start.
For each transfer, Bitsorb opens a separate window, and you get to see how many connections have been established, the download speed, how much time is left, and so on.
Moreover, in the Download Properties panel you can also input authentication details for the download server if necessary. Note that the possibility to establish multiple threads or to pause the transfer depends greatly on the download’s source.
Bitsorb provides basic download acceleration capabilities without making you deal with complex user interfaces or workflows.
Nonetheless, even though the app gets the job done, the customization options are non-existent. You cannot change the default number of connections per download, you don't have the option to schedule automatic downloads, you may not limit the bandwidth used by the utility, and so on.
