AIM, also known as AOL Instant Messenger, is an application with a long history that has seen it go from market share leader to virtual unknown. It was widely used for the first ten years after it was launched, although a Mac version was only released in 2008.
By then, the decline had already begun, as users had started switching to social networking websites or other instant messaging apps. The application has not managed to recover its user base since then, but some new features have been added in an effort to integrate more popular social networking platforms.
AIM needs to be redesigned from the ground up when it comes to its UI, as it definitely showing its age, and the menu arrangement is rather uninspired. Things get better when you select the alternative, minimalistic layout, however, as it becomes much easier to manage multiple conversations.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to send files by dropping them onto the application window, and only a limited number of emojis are available.
With the knowledge that few people rely on their AIM accounts anymore, the developers have tried to integrate other, more popular social platforms to make the application more useful.
More specifically, you can chat with your Google Hangouts friends, as well as add feeds from your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Gmail accounts, so as to see notifications on your desktop.
While the application supports video chat and allows you to take pictures using a webcam, Adobe Flash Player needs to be installed on your machine.
Overall, the partial integration of popular social networking platforms is a good idea, but AIM needs a lot more work before it can contend with other instant messaging services.
As it stands, there is no reason to recommend it over existing alternatives, as it is outdated, difficult to use and offers a limited array of features.
