Image files can be optimized in order to reduce their size and improve the load time for your website, the transfer time for photo collections, and so on. imagemin is a basic OS X app that enables you to perform the procedure with a simple drag and drop.

The imagemin user interface is represented by an uncomplicated window, on top of which you must drag and drop the files you want to optimize.

imagemin will apply different compression algorithms that will reduce the files size, and you get to see how many files have been processed and how much space has been saved.

Note that imagemin does not modify your original files. The utility creates a new folder called “optimized” in the source files directory, which represents the output location for the processed images.

In order to reduce the files size, imagemin will proceed to compress the content stored in JPG, GIF, and SVG images. The app should also be able to perform a lossless compression on PNG files, but during our test, on an iMac running on El Capitan, imagemin could not complete the task.

The best part is that imagemin comes with batch processing support, regardless if the files have the same format or not, which means that you get to handle large image collections in no time.

However, imagemin does not come with any type of customization options: you cannot specify the output location, and you don’t have the option to adjust details related to the compression methods, or personalize the app’s interface.

imagemin proposes a straightforward solution for reducing the size of your image files: the utility gets the job done on its own with minimal user interaction. On the other hand, if you are not satisfied with the results, the original files remain intact.
