Sprites are computer entities that either come in two-dimensional, three-dimensional or in animation form and used to represent one of the building foundations for every 80’s or 90’s game’s graphics.
SpriteIlluminator, as its name suggests, is a powerful map editor for rendering dynamic lighting and other light related interesting effects.
Working with the application is an easy process due to its intuitive and user-friendly interface, but, also thanks to the smooth workings with all its controls.
The top toolbar is especially useful, as it enables you to open and save projects, add or remove sprites, undo or redo last actions, and to publish your final project.
Working with this app shouldn’t represent much of a challenge, as you must drag and drop your sprites from the Finder onto SpriteIlluminator’s loading panel, on the upper left side of its main window, move the light source around to create the desired effect, use the interesting built-in collections of effects and tools, and, click the Publish button found on the top toolbar.
Under the Sprite panel, you can find the Global light panel that is quite handy because it enables you to change the Z value of the light source, change the ambient light’s intensity, the brightness, the light color for both the source and the ambient light, and, to auto-rotate the light source.
What’s more, because certain sprites have colors that deal in different ways with light and the effect might be hard to see, the application provides you with four display modes, namely Texture, Lighted surface, Lighted texture, Normal map.
Working with the Global light panel can lead to some cool looking results for your sprites, but most of the magic is possible with the help of SpriteIlluminator’s tools, located on the right side of its main window.
From the Effects panel, you can use the Bevel tool that helps you add volume to your sprites and the Emboss tool that makes it easy for you to add volume inside a sprite or to make the structure pop-out.
The Draw tool is powerful as it enables you to raise or lower parts of the sprite, the Angle brush, with its two modes (continuous and discrete) helps you change your sprite’s orientation and add brushes, while the Structure tool enables you to apply structure and surface effects.
SpriteIllustrator is an easy to use yet powerful dynamic light and special effects editor that has the potential to turn any sprite from flat and boring into something almost live looking.
