SetEXIFData For Mac

EXIF tags are useful, but there are plenty of reasons to want to modify them. You may want to make adjustments or remove the embedded data altogether for privacy reasons, and doing this for a whole photo album requires specialized software.

SetEXIFData is based on ExifTool, and it’s designed to facilitate batch EXIF tag editing. It allows you to use presets for quickly setting preferences, retrieve data from various sources, rename files based on metadata, add or remove Geotags, and more.

Before getting started, you’ll need to install ExifTool and LibRaw, the former being included in the disk image. You can also use dcraw instead of LibRaw for as long as Rosetta 2 support is enabled in Apple’s processors.

Essentially, SetEXIFData packs ExifTool’s functionality in a more intuitive package, with lots of quality-of-life features.

After loading the image or video files you wish to process, you can either remove all metadata or fill in the information that should overwrite existing tags. Note that SetEXIFData isn’t meant for making adjustments. You’ll only see the original metadata in the preview panel, as the app is intended for completely overwriting EXIF tags.

As you move through the tabs, you’ll be able to fill in the required information, which can then be saved to presets. This way, the next time you want to add the same info, you can just select one of these presets.

When editing date/time info, the data can be retrieved from EXIF tags, Finder modified/created dates, or even the file or folder name. This information can also be used to rename the files as they are exported.

Geotags can be added from presets or contacts, as well as by selecting a location on the map or inputting the coordinates manually.

Overall, SetEXIFData is suitable for processing large media albums that require EXIF tags to be overwritten or removed. It’s not intended for minor adjustments, but rather wholesale replacement. It’s efficient when using presets, and it’s not at all difficult to master.
