ScreenShot PSD is a minimalist Mac OS X application that is able to grab desktop screenshots in PSD format: each element on your screen will get its own layer, and you can edit the picture in any graphic tool that can work with layers.

The ScreenShot PSD application resides in your status bar, which means that is both unobtrusive and easily accessible. The utility also comes with a system wide keyboard shortcut for triggering the image capture: Shift + Command + 5.

However, keep in mind that you cannot grab only a specific window: ScreenShot PSD allows you to capture only the entire screen. The app also includes a “Timed Screenshot” function, but you do not get to customize the delay timer.

In fact, ScreenShot PSD comes with very few personalization options: you only get to change the output folder, and to decide if you want to automatically open the PSD after grabbing the screenshot. Working with ScreenShot PSD proves to be fairly intuitive.

ScreenShot PSD automatically generates a separate layer for each window present on your desktop, and creates layers for the Dock, Cursor, Menubar, and so on. You can use the utility to capture the Launchpad, the Notification Center, Spaces, Expose, or Mission Control.

The app can handle the windows that have shadows, can deal with transparency, works with Retina or HiDPI modes, and is able to function with dual displays.

ScreenShot PSD is a great tool to have around if you need to generate layered screenshots that can be easily edited in any graphic tool. However, the app comes with very few customization options, and can grab screenshots only in full screen.
