Regard3D For Mac

Regard3D is a powerful open source visual rendering application that makes it possible for you to create 3D models from a series of photos taken of the same object but from different viewpoints or angles.

Right from the start, we must point out that working with Regard3D isn’t what you would call intuitive. This said, be prepared to strictly follow a set of steps if you want your projects to turn out as you imagine them.

Before you get started, here are some things you should know: the more pictures you take of the object, the better, the images should be taken at a slightly different angles than others, the higher their resolutions are, the more detailed the overall result will be, and, ideally, the object should be photographed from every angle.

Now you are ready to start a new project by clicking the Create new project button. After the project’s path is set and you have named your project, you will have to click the “Add Picture Set” button and load your set of pictures.

Click OK and the “compute matches” button and the app will detect the keypoints in each image and match them with other keypoints from other pictures.

The next step is the triangulation step where you will have to make sure that the “Matches 0” item is selected and to click the “Triangulation …” button. Only two more steps to go before you have your 3D object: click the “Create dense pointcloud…” button and, finally, the “Create Surface…” button.

Regard3D works better than expect and without draining your Mac’s resources, the only downside being that it has a rather steep learning curve.

While not very user-friendly, Regard3D is a comprehensive and quite powerful software solution for creating 3D models from sets of images.
