Editing images in order to make the final result more appealing is a fairly common practice and the techniques are so exquisite that, most of the time, you cannot tell what part of the photo has been polished.

Photo Police is a small Mac OS X utility designed to help you analyze any JPG image and identify the areas that have been modified by highlighting low-bit pixel data.

The Photo Police user interface is extremely simple and intuitive so, to get started, all you have to do is launch the application and import a JPG image: use the “Open” button placed in the bottom left corner of the main window.

Photo Police quickly scans file and displays the original image in the left side of the main window, while the analysis result is placed on the right. Of course, the processing time is influenced by the image size and quality.

By being able to visualize the low-bit pixel data, Photo Police enables you to check if there  is a hidden image in the JPG file, if there are modified or deleted items or if some parts have been blurred.

Note that this type of visual information is noisy, but it is also a clear indicator in case photo correction techniques have been used on a specific image.

For your convenience, Photo Police provides image zooming tools designed to help you take a closer look to specific areas. Moreover, you can choose to fit the images to the window size or bring them to their actual size.

Photo Police can be successfully used to identify the areas that have been modified in any JPG image file. The app does not tell you what has been edited but lets you know that someone has been tampering with the photo.
