Easy to use and open source macOS application created to help you capture GIFs of a custom area on your Mac's screen using a resizable window. #Capture GIF #Record GIF #Record screen #GIF #Capture #Record
GifCapture is a simple to use and minimalist screen capture application designed to help you record GIFs of what's going on on your Mac's desktop.
After being launched, the GifCapture app will display its recording frame which is designed to help you pinpoint what exactly you want to capture on the screen.
The frame is easily resizable by dragging any of its borders, and you will be able to see the dimensions of the output GIF beforehand on the bottom left side of the capture frame.
GifCapture also remembers the window position so that you won't have to scour around your Mac's displays to find it. Unfortunately, even though GifCapture can be moved to a second screen if you have a multi-monitor setup, it does not come with support for multiple displays, and it will record a full-screen GIF of your main screen,
To start recording a GIF, you have to click on the Record button or use the ⌘ + R hotkey and to stop it you can use the Stop button in GifCapture's capture frame or the ⌘ + S keyboard combination.
Even though the app also supports pausing and resuming the recording process, there is no keyboard support for these two actions; therefore, you will have to use the mouse to click on the Pause / Resume button.
GifCapture saves the output GIF by default in the Downloads directory in your home folder, but you can customize it by entering a different path manually in the Preferences window.
Moreover, GifCapture records GIFs at eight frames per second, a hardcoded value which, unfortunately, means that you will not be able to customize the framerate if you need to.
As an additional downside, once you start recording, you cannot move the recording frame to focus on a different area of the screen, so you have to plan ahead before starting the capture process.
During the test phase, GifCapture also failed to start the recording process at times, as it managed to detect the mouse click on the Record button or the keyboard shortcut quite erratically (it took as anything from 1 to 5 clicks, or shortcut uses to start the capture process).
Taking all of the above into consideration, although it lacks a couple of features and we found some bugs while testing it, GifCapture worked fine, and it did help us record tens of correctly working GIFs.
Hence, if you need a tool to help you capture your Mac's screen to a GIF, GifCapture is a good app to have in your toolset for such a purpose.
