The GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) is an open source project designed to provide an open source image manipulation solution that can be run on various platforms. GIMP allows you to process photos, draw new graphic projects, convert pictures to various file formats, and so on.
GIMP.app is based on the GIMP project and provides a bundled GIMP application that will work on Mac OS X right out of the box, as long as the X11 environment is installed. However, keep in mind that the GIMP.app has not been updated in some time, and that you can find more recent GIMP binaries.
The GIMP.app installation process is reduced to a simple drag and drop to your disk, and the first time your launch the app, the utility automatically creates a subdirectory in your home folder that contains all the configuration details. Nonetheless, via the GIMP.app Preferences window you can easily change the storage location for various resources.
Having said that, working with GIMP.app is extremely straightforward: the app comes with separate windows for the Toolbox, for the image canvas, and for the Layers, Channels, Paths, Undo - Brushes, Pattern, and Gradients.
As a result, all you have to do is open an image, or create a working space, and select the tools you want to employ from their respective windows. GIMP.app is featuring various painting tools (brushes, a pencil, an airbrush, an so on), transformation tools (rotate, scale, flip, or shear), and selection tools (intelligent scissors, bezier, ellipse, free, and more).
Moreover, the app enables you to work with transparency, offers support for layers and channels, undo and redo actions, and can work with popular image formats, such as GIF, JPEG, PDF, TIFF, PNG, or BMP.
The GIMP.app is a great tool to have around whenever you want to process images without having to deal with expensive and complicated photo editing suites that use a large chunk of your resources. At the same time, the app’s capabilities can be easily extended by using various scripts.
