It isn’t always obvious whether text on your website or in an app can easily be read by everyone. That’s why there are guidelines like WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) around, which help developers design content that is accessible to anyone.

Colour Contrast Analyser is a fairly simple Electron-based app that helps you check color contrast to make sure it is compliant with the WCAG standards. It’s very easy to use and provides useful information to help you figure out why the text on a page may not be ideal.

Normally, the only thing you’ll have to do is open the app and pick the foreground (text) and background colors. The app window is always on top, so it’s easy to work with when you need to pick colors from another window. Hotkeys are also available for this purpose.

If you’re just deciding on the colors, you can provide color codes in various formats or define them using sliders. A small preview of the text on your selected background will be displayed, along with the WCAG results.

In the lower half of the main window, you can see the resulting contrast ratio and how your selected colors fare when assessed using the available guidelines. It checks the contrast ratio of regular text, large text, and graphical objects against the background.

If you get a fail for any reason, you can bring up some details to get an idea of why the chosen colors are not appropriate. You can then tweak them in the same UI until you get a passing grade.
