Tesseract is a fast-paced FPS game with an open-source engine derived from the more common Cube 2: Sauerbraten game. Tesseract is one of those games that could confuse you at first, as it has a somewhat double personality.

The Tesseract game is actually focused on being both a satisfying shooter and a cooperative game for map editing. Right off the bat, the basic nature of the game will make it a “love it or hate it” kind of experience.

Starting with the basics, Tesseract can be played on internet servers, which we have to admit, there aren’t that many, and, unfortunately, aren’t that populated. The game can be also played in a single-player mode with the help of bots.

The character controls are straightforward, responsive and quite accurate and behave exactly as you would expect from a game such as this, a good thing, considering its intense, fast-paced gameplay.

You can equip yourself with one of the two weapons available: a railgun, which acts as a sniper weapon, and a pulse riffle. We must admit, the two weapons are not what you would call fast or satisfying to shoot for that matter, as the railgun takes forever to load, and the pulse rifle isn’t actually all that fast.

In our opinion, the gameplay is simply too fast and the weapons too slow for the most part. But, who knows, maybe you will be able to develop a very accurate shooting style to compensate. A useful feature is the melee attack, which enables you to punch enemies if you are too close for an effective shot, and slightly makes up for the slow shooting speed.

Getting passed this, Tesseract’s rendering engine is as good as they get at map editing. The engine includes dynamic omnidirectional shadows, advanced anti-aliasing techniques, HDR lighting, deferred shading and global illumination.

All these translates into beautifully rendered lights and textures that immerse the players who like to build maps into Tesseract. As strange as this game feels when played as a FPS, it feel twice as good when it comes to in-game map editing.

Tesseract is nowhere near a bad game, but it does require a bit of getting used to as it is both a fairly good and simple FPS game, as well as an interesting creativity tool. You should definitely give Tesseract a spin and find out for yourself if you like its double focused personality or not.
