Dwarf Fortress is an intriguing single player fantasy game that places you in worlds with distinct civilizations spanning centuries of detailed history, hundreds of towns, caves and regions filled with a rich and deadly wildlife.
Dwarf Fortress comes with two main game modes, the Fortress mode, that puts you in charge of a group of dwarves that need to build a complex, resistant and wealthy subterranean fortress in a mountain, and Adventurer mode, that places you in the shoes of an adventurer that travels the world and battles with all sorts of creatures.
There is also a third game mode, the Legend mode, that offers a more relaxing gaming experience and that helps you view a detailed history of the world.
Dwarf Fortress’ architecture is based on a complex physics engine, however the action of the game is displayed in text only code page 437 graphics using various colors. The action takes place in procedurally generated worlds that come with historical events and figures that are documented and recorded in the individual world’s files as game lore.
The game starts with the generation of a new world and the properties of the world are randomly generated. However, the specifications of the world can be heavily influenced by your input as you set the map size, mineral occurrence, natural savagery and more.
In the Fortress game mode, the properties of the deployment site can influence the outcome of your quest. Of particular importance are the natural resources, such as wood, stone and ore, as well as the geographic features, like waterfalls, beaches, oceans, rivers, cliffs and other landforms.
By playing the Adventure mode, on the other hand, you’ll have the opportunity to meet and befriend other sentient creatures. As the story unfolds, you can gain access to better weapons and armors by looting corpses of defeating enemies.
What's new in Dwarf Fortress 0.47.05:
- Here's an interim release - this is a fixer-upper for the old version, and not related at all to the new graphical stuff. This isn't meant to address everything of course, or even most things, and we'll be cleaning up a lot more bugs and issues for the Premium release itself. This one gets rid of some long-standing crashes and also attempts to address most of what we learned from the stress discussion from the forum. There are still a few unmet needs (which don't contribute much to stress, but are an eyesore), and a few outstanding ideas related to winning sieges, ending wars and unattended children, but we'll need larger changes there that are better integrated with the Premium work.
- It's always a little weird splitting the bug fixes into the two major/minor categories, but especially here, where the stress changes add up to a lot, so the division below is particularly arbitrary on that score.
