Beasties is a Java based and open source cross-platform game in which you must survive battling monsters.
You have your fists, a knife, a gun, and medicine to heal your wounds. Be careful, though, as your ammunition and medicine are limited, and the knife is subject to breaking.
While Beasties is a full-fledged game in and of itself, its purpose is to aid in the development of a larger game that will utilize the features of this game as a battle engine.
