Rephrase is a Java based OS X application that analyzes any text string and makes suggestions for improving the phrase structure. The app identifies the unnecessary elements and creates an improved version that eliminates wordiness.

The Rephrase app main window is organized in two main areas: on the left you must input the original text, while in the right panel you will be able to see the cleaned up version. Unfortunately, the output text will not take into consideration the window size, so you must either scroll horizontally to read the entire string, or make the window larger if possible.

The top menus and the bottom toolbars provide quick access to all the Rephrase functions. To get things going, you must load at least one rule file: the app’s archive includes 3 of them (1337, default, and French).

By default, Rephrase filters your text taking into consideration the latest loaded rule file. However, if you use the “Combine Rules” button, Rephrase will generate suggestions following the rules of both files.

Nonetheless, take into account that Rephrase simply identifies certain expressions and proposes equivalent expressions that are reduced in size to minimize wordiness: you must actually reread the text on your own to make sure your phrases still have the same meaning.

At the same time, verifying the results before saving the output is advisable, since the Rephrase suggestions do not always follow the sentence structure or meaning.
