Declan Software provides a collection of vocabulary improvement tools that have the same user interface but are using resources for different languages. The Japanese FlashCards Mac app is part of this collection and seems to be a great utility if you just started learning Japanese or if you want to extend your knowledge of the language.

All the Japanese FlashCards tools are accessible via the main window which has a very organized design: the left panel includes buttons for all the Japanese FlashCards tools, while in the right side area you can view the content of the word lists, solve exercises and much more.

The included language tools are organized in a very logical manner. Right off the bat, under the “Current WordFile” tag you can access the currently selected world file and choose one of the exercises modes, or you can enter the review area. However, keep in mind that, by default, the learning list is limited to 10 entries even if the pack includes many more words.

Japanese FlashCards proposes four types of exercises: word (you will see the symbol and you must select the correct word), meaning (you view the word and you must select the correct symbol), grid (you will receive the meaning and you must select the missing character from a large grid) and listening (you can hear the pronunciation and you must select the correct meaning).

The app provides access to over 100 word files that comprise more than 6000 Japanese words. Note that only the first four wordfiles are included by default and that you must manually download the others.

Last but not least, the “Tasks and Options” panel offers you the possibility to decide which exercises are required, to add all the words in the list to the learning mode, to adjust the audio volume and much more.

All in all, Japanese FlashCards comes with an intuitive user interface and provides access to a large collection of Japanese words. Regardless if you are just starting learning the language or if you are simply looking for a way to improve your vocabulary, the application will prove to be extremely useful.
