Part of the Declan Software suite of language learning software, Chinese FlashCards is a simple yet very useful Mac app designed to help you start learning Chinese or extend your vocabulary. Note that the app is focused on Manadarin Chinese and is using simplified characters.

Working with Chinese FlashCards is fairly intuitive: you can use the left side panel to access the app’s tools, while the main area is reserved for solving exercises or reviewing word lists.

By default, Chinese FlashCards comes with 3 words list: seasons, day of the week and animals. However, via the “Load WordFile” panel you can download more than 100 lists comprising more that 5000 Chinese words and expressions. In addition, through the “Custom WordFiles” area you can access lists created by your friends and even make your own.

To get started, select a subject and navigate to the “Review Learning List” panel to visualize the Chinese writing, the word pronunciation and the meaning of the included word. What’s more, you can also listen to an audio recording with the correct pronunciation.

Initially, the review list includes only 10 words, but you can choose to view all the words contained in the current list via the “Task and Options” panel. The area also provides other customization options: you can change the review mode, adjust the volume level, specify which exercises are required and more.

To help you evaluate your progress but also to aid the memorization process, Chinese FlashCards provides 4 types of exercises: word (you see the Chinese word and you must select the correct meaning), meaning (you see the meaning and you must indicate the Chinese word), grid (you see the meaning and part of the Chinese word and you must select the correct symbol from a grid) and listening (you hear the Chinese pronunciation and you must select the meaning).

To conclude, Chinese FlashCards offers you the possibility to learn more than 5000 Chinese words and comes with a fairly intuitive user interface and workflow.
