jq is a free, lightweight and flexible command-line JSON processor designed to be like sed but for JSON data.

Moreover, jq can be used to easily manipulate any JSON structured data with the exact same ease that awk, sed, grep and their friends allow you to play with text from the command-line.

Furthermore, jq is written using C and it has no runtime dependencies, so it should be possible to build it and run it on nearly any platform.

Detailed information on how to use the jq tool on your own Mac is available HERE.

The downloaded jq binary should run with no needed modification, but you may have to make it executable first by running the following command:

chmod +x jq

Main features:

  • Developed suing portable C
  • Zero runtime dependencies
  • Can convert the data format you have into the one you want with very little effort
  • Makes manipulating and transforming structured data quick and effortless
