SQL Workbench/J is a free, cross-platform and Java based SQL query tool with a main focus on efficiently running SQL scripts and bundles a large collection of import and export features.
First thing’s first, in order to start working with SQL Workbench/J, you will need to configure the JDBC drivers for your specific database.
This can easily be done from the initial connection window by clicking on the “Manage Drivers” button. After the location for the driver is specified, you must download the driver from locations provided on SQL Workbench/J developer’s website.
While this process isn’t all that hard, it does require a little bit of patience and willingness in order to get it right. A comprehensive list with all the steps is, again, provided by the developer on the Getting Started page.
Once these requirements are met, you can start editing, inserting, deleting data directly in the query results, write files like CSV, XML, HTML, or SQL with the help of export commands, and import text, XML files and spreadsheets.
SQL Workbench/J enables you to compare the data from two database schemas and generate SQL statements. What’s more, the application can also run SQL scripts in batch mode and also in console mode.
SQL Workbench/J makes it easy for you to search text in procedures, search for data from columns in all tables, to copy data between database servers, to display database objects and their definitions, table source and trigger source codes.
The application worked well while we tested it, but it must be said that we encountered several problems when trying to load the “Triggers” menu from the Database Explorer, i.e. the app froze and the only thing we could to was to force quit and restart it.
With is plethora of useful features, SQL Workbench/J is a streamlined software solution for running SQL scripts that, in the right hands, can prove to be a powerful tool for SQL database management.
