3D printing is now standard practice in manufacturing, making suitable software more important than ever. And even if you’re just a hobbyist, why not get some proper software for that fancy new printer you spent all your money on?
UltiMaker Cura is a highly popular 3D printing app that makes slicing an intuitive process, enabling you to prepare your models for printing without too much trouble. It features a user-friendly design, with guided steps that help you every step of the way.
Despite what the name might suggest, the app supports all kinds of 3D printers, not just UltiMaker models. You can add them quite easily via a wizard, and then switch between them if you have multiple devices.
Loading the model is as simple as dropping it in the main UI. You can then play around with its dimensions and positioning to sure everything is set up correctly.
When you’re ready, you can check the top-right drop-down menu, where you’ll be able to customize printing settings. You can choose from recommended presets suitable for various purposes, or customize everything yourself.
While you can get your hands dirty and fine-tune every setting if you know what you’re doing, a novice’s experience will be very straightforward. Just select a profile and start slicing.
Once slicing is completed, you can move to the Preview panel, where you’ll see a layer-by-layer view of the model. The x-ray view also gives you a better look at its insides.
Finally, you can monitor the progress of printing jobs after sending models to your printer.
There are quite a few good 3D printing apps available, and UltiMaker Cura is definitely one of the best. It stands out particularly because of its intuitive design, but it’s remarkably powerful and versatile if you know what you’re doing.
