tonalfish is a minimalist yet powerful music player designed for Mac users that don’t want to rely on iTunes. The app comes with full-screen support and a mini-player mode so that it can fit perfectly on you desktop either way.

By default, tonalfish will scan your Music folder and automatically list any compatible audio file that has been detected. However, via the Preferences window, you can quickly add new audio sources: you can configure multiple directories, and the app will also go through subfolders.

For your convenience, tonalfish can automatically remove entries associated with deleted or missing files and allows you to choose the default view on startup (playlists, albums, artists, genres, or tracks). The same area allows you to set the maximum number of records per page.

Within the tonalfish user interface, you can sort your entries by various criteria and also filter them by name. Note that you can easily switch between the player view and the playlist editor and that you can perform management tasks without interrupting the playback.

What’s more, tonalfish allows you to edit the metadata of multiple tracks at the same time: change the album or the artist name, select one of the available music genres, load the artwork you want to employ, and then merely press the “Update All” button.

tonalfish includes everything you need to play tracks and manage your playlist without having to import the files to a music library. The app scans any location on your drive for suitable audio files and updates the listing automatically.

At the same time, tonalfish allows you to change the track’s artwork or update their metadata, but keep in mind that the editing options are quite limited.
