We often get good ideas throughout the day that we never write down, as that usually means interrupting our current task and disrupting our workflow.

Voicey is a lightweight app that offers an alternative, as it allows you to record voice memos with a couple of mouse clicks, aided by its convenient status bar icon.

Voicey is nothing if not minimalistic, as the low-key menu bar icon is the only indication that the app is up and running. Clicking it brings up the main app window, which enables you to start, stop or pause recordings, as well as track their length and view the current input volume.

The application displays the status of the current job in the menu bar, letting you know if it is actively capturing sound or if the recording has been paused. You can click this text to pause or resume the job without having to bring up the main app window.

It is possible set global hotkeys to start, pause and stop capturing more easily, but the status of the recording is not updated in the menu bar when you use them.

Your recordings are automatically saved as M4A files in a predefined folder as soon as you click the ‘Stop’ button. No other formats are supported, and you cannot customize the encoder settings in any way.

While it is understandable that the app tries to keep things as simple as possible and reduce interruptions to a minimum, it would help if you had the option of renaming the output files after a memo is created, so as to make them easier to sort through at the end of the day.

Voicey does a good job of providing you with a straightforward method of recording voice memos, without requiring you to perform complex operations that would disrupt your workflow. However, it would benefit from an optional file renaming function to make it easier to organize your recordings, as well as better support for global hotkeys.
