ToneKey is a standalone tone mapping application for Mac OS X that offers you the possibility to employ various scales, and map them to match your own skill level.
Noteworthy is that, to employ the ToneKey application, you must have a MIDI keyboard connected to your Mac computer via USB.
The ToneKey application integrates more than 30 different piano scales designed to match various playing techniques.
The utility keeps them organized by type (western diatonic, exotic diatonic, or pentatonic), and you can choose the one you want to employ via a drop down menu.
To make things easier, the built-in Scale Mapping function allows you to choose 7 or 5 notes to which the scale will be mapped to. As a result, playing a certain scale can prove to be less demanding, which translates into fewer errors.
ToneKey also integrates a learning mode that, depending on the scale your are using, will map the MIDI keyboard only with the original notes while all the others remain silent.
The utility also allows you to see the Score for the current scale and offers you the possibility to envision the notes position on the keyboard.
Last but not least, the Chord Builder and the Arpeggiator offer the user the possibility to design both chords and arpeggios that can be played with a single finger. These tools can prove to be very useful to more professional users, such as digital composers.
ToneKey can be employed to remap various scales to your liking in order to reduce the number of errors while playing, but also functions as a user-friendly learning tool. Either way, the application will give a boost to your piano playing.
