Mac OS X comes with many useful and intelligent features, but one area in which it lacks skills is the sharing audio devices between two or more Macs on a network.
This is a downside because network device sharing has proved to be a very productive process, like in the cases of a network shared printer in an office or, say, a fax, or a screen.
Shairwaves a multi-channel network audio utility that enables you to effortlessly share your Mac’s audio devices over your network comes to fill this gap. The Shairwaves app also makes it possible to stream sound from your Mac using any audio device on the network.
After installation, Shairwaves is added to OS X's System Preferences window as a preference pane that features a basic and straightforward interface with only one window, and two main tab menus.
Shairwave’s first preference tab is called "Share local devices", and, as its name suggests, it enables you to control local devices and share your music with other computers. The "Choose network devices" tab helps you to toggle each network audio device on or off.
The best thing about using it is the fact that you can use any app to stream the audio track embedded within local or web-based multimedia content with the help of Shairwaves, straight to the audio device you've selected as the active output within its preference pane.
Another noteworthy feature is the fact that Shairwaves can also be put to work over Wi-fi, so you don’t have to be limited to Ethernet-based networking devices.
To expand the subject a bit, Shairwaves makes it easy for you to use multiple network devices on your Mac at the same time, and, also, if a computer is sharing multiple devices, it simplifies accessing every one and each of them.
Another plus is the fact that, Shairwaves has a feature called "headphone priority" designed to switch between the audio transmitted by speakers and headphones, when the former are connected to your Mac.
Taking all things into consideration, Shairwaves is a straightforward multi-channel audio device sharing app which enables you to both share your computer’s audio devices over a network and to stream audio content to devices shared by other Macs that run Shairwaves on the same network.
