PS3 Media Server is a powerful and practical UPnP Media Server, originally designed to support PlayStation 3. However, PS3 Media Server has been expanded to provide support for numerous other music players, smartphones, media renderers, TVs, music players and more.

PS3 Media Server is mainly written in Java, facts that makes it compatible with all major operating systems that come with support for this environment. With PS3 Media Server’s help, you can stream and transcode a wide variety of media format with little to no effort.

PS3 Media Server is capable to run in your Mac’s status bar from where you can access its menu and summon the Main Panel. Once opened, you can check the server status, restart or stop it with just a few mouse clicks.

You can view the server’s log and search for bugs or issues if necessary. More configuration options are available under the General Configuration tab. From here, you can change the language of the app and enable it to start minimized.

More experienced users can force networking on a certain interface and provide their own IP and port while limiting the bandwidth. You can even enable the HTTP engine V2 and prevent your Mac to sleep while streaming.

By accessing the Navigation/Share Settings, you can configure PS3 Media Server to generate thumbnails using MPLayer, import audio thumbnails from Amazon or Discogs. What is more, you can enable PS3 Media Server to display compressed archives, hide file extensions, enable cache, show iTunes, iPhoto and Aperture library, hide empty files and more.
