Cog for Mac is a rudimentary yet catchy, decent audio player that aims to satisfy with its design and functionality. Its addictively minimalistic interface goes easy on the eyes while retaining style and good taste.

The installation is pretty straightforward. After the image file is downloaded and mounted, you can directly access the application type file and open Cog. For improved access, it’s a good idea to drag and drop it or its icon into the Mac OS X Application cluster tab.

It offers to perform regular update checks on each startup, or lets you manually do it and integrates well with the Mac OS X system tray bar, as focusing on the application populates it with relevant settings

Cog retains a customary format and setting rage that can be found on standard audio players, like volume control, next/previous track alongside buttons for repeat and shuffle mode. Others show the source file in the Finder as well to avoid tedious investigations, or provide information about the file sample rate, bitrate and audio bit depth or resolution, measured in bits per sample. Their names of latter statistics are a bit uncommon though, and casual computer users might be a bit confused at first.

Media Library supports drag and drop, and is composed of a table containing information under the form of unicode tags, and by that we mean the artist name, track number, the album name, year of release, defining genre. Exotic audio format files or less know extensions are supported, like Ogg Vorbis, Shorten and Monkeys Audio, along with the standard Flac, Mp3, Wavpack or Wav and AAC.

Cog has a conveniently quick song name and artist accessing, without having to focus on the frontend window. All that’s required for it is to right click on its Dock icon and look at the top two lines that pop. Strangely enough though, Cog doesn’t have a mute button.

It’s worth mentioning that its compatibility with newer OSes might present some crippling functionality issues, which might be due to the lack of any recent updates.

Cog is a good choice and pretty reliable playback software tool. It’s worth giving it a shot, because it quickly grows on you. For some users though, the functionality issues that might entail in combination with newer OSes can be a deal-breaker.
