Boson is a straightforward macOS application that aims to make any audio editing task as time efficient as possible. The app can record audio content captured by your microphone, or you can import certain types of audio files.
The app also packs elementary audio processing capabilities and enables you to export the project using the Boson proprietary file format, or by converting the data to popular file formats such as MP3, M4A, OGG, Flac, WAV, AIFF, or CAF.
Boson opens a separate window for each recording or file you want to process, and you can have multiple windows open at the same time. Moreover, Boson automatically generates a visual representation of each audio capture, which will prove very useful during the editing process.
You can use your mouse to select individual portions during the editing process, and Boson will apply effects only to that particular selection. You can use the mouse scroll button or hotkeys to zoom in or out the graphic representation.
At the bottom of each Boson window you get to see the audio editing tools (Cut, Copy, Paste, Undo, Redo, Crop, Fade in/out, Amplify, Normalize, Seilence, Reverse, and Swap channels) and the playback controller.
Besides the audio recording capabilities, the Boson built-in player also offers you the possibility to listen to the audio, to jump back or forward, to loop the recording, and so on.
Last but not least, via the Boson Volume button you get to adjust the output volume, but also the default input and output devices.
Boson proposes a clean workspace where you get to perform essential audio processing tasks without having to deal with complicated settings.
However, during our test, on a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with 6GB RAM, the Boson CPU usage went at times to up to 88%. The RAM usage remained to around 60MB.
Moreover, even though the Boson Express should be able to export your project to all supported media files while imposing certain limitations, we managed to save our project only using the Boson proprietary .bdw format. All other attempts concluded with the Boson app crashing.
