Apple has just started seeding iOS 9 to iPhone and iPad owners across the world, but due to some server-side problems, the download fails with an error saying that the process cannot be started.

Right now, it appears that downloading iOS 9 is impossible all over the world and the error that everyone is getting reads the following;

Software Update Failed. An error occurred downloading iOS 9.

There’s no workaround for the time being, and our best option is to wait until Apple addresses the issue, which should happen anytime in the next minutes.

Most likely, the issues are being experienced because of the huge number of users trying to download iOS 9, so the problem should be fixed as the bits are being delivered to devices across the world.

iOS 9 offers support for iPad 2, 3, 4, Air, Air 2, iPad mini, iPad mini 2, and iPad mini 3. As far as iPhones are concerned, the following models are supported: iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus. iPod touch can also run iOS 9.

For the moment, it turns out that the same problem is experienced by both those running iOS 9 GM and users trying to upgrade from iOS 8.4.1. The former are provided with a 42.7 MB package, while the latter need to download 1.2 GB of upgrades.

Update: it turns out that downloading iOS 9 via iTunes is working correctly for most users, so for the moment, OTA updates might be the only ones impacted by the issue. We're still waiting for a word from Apple, so in the meantime, you might want to try to update with iTunes if you don't want to wait any longer.

Update 2: we're hearing that iPhones might be the only ones impacted by the problem, as iPads can get the update both via OTA and iTunes.

Update 3: some users claim that rebooting their iPhones repeatedly and retrying the download might work. And yet, be advised that the error can also show up during the download and interrupt the process!

Update 4: we're seeing more reports from users who confirm that updating via iTunes works just fine.

Update 5: our iPhones have just started updating correctly OTA. Apple might have fixed the problems.

Update 6: PROBLEMS FIXED! Downloading iOS 9 should run smoothly now, no matter your device.
