Right after its release, over-the-air updates to 9.0.1 fail

Apple has just released the new iOS 9.0.1 version that fixes the "Slide to Upgrade" bug in iOS 9, but users experience problems updating their iOS devices using the OTA (over the air) update system.

At the moment, multiple iOS users from all over the world report that checking for updates on iOS devices will throw an "Unable to check for update. An error occurred while checking for a software update" error, and I also got the error on my iPhone while trying to update to the latest iOS release.

The error appears on iPhones, iPads and iPod touches that try to connect to Apple's update servers to check for an update and will most probably persist until the number of users trying to upgrade their devices dwindles down.

Fortunately, there is a solution to this problem, and if you want to get your device updated to iOS 9.0.1, you can still do it by connecting to your Mac, opening iTunes and waiting for the alert saying that "A new iPhone software version (9.0.1) is available."

Once this alert appears, you just have to click on the "Download and Update" button, and your device should be automatically upgraded to iOS 9.0.1.

As usual, before updating to a new iOS release, you should also back up the contents of your iOS device to prevent any data loss in case anything goes wrong during the update process.
