Speculation emerges after the USPTO published a new Apple patent

A purported iPhone 6 leak coupled with a newly published patent application suggest Apple has plans to equip its upcoming smartphone with a bayonet mount that supports interchangeable camera lenses, in what would turn the iPhone 6 into something of a light DSLR.

Titled “Bayonet attachment mechanisms,” the patent mentions attachment mechanisms that may be configured to couple accessory devices together, “such as lens devices to an electronic device.”

Illustrations published by AppleInsider show what the bayonet mount would look like on a new iPhone. One of the sketches would support the recent iPhone 6 leak from China which purported to show a protuberant ring around the camera module on Apple’s upcoming smartphone.

The patent application continues with Apple saying, “For example, a lens may be coupled to the exterior of an electronic device with first and second attachment mechanisms. A first attachment mechanism may include bayonets that collectively define and surround an aperture. The bayonets may be received in a body, and a compliance member such as an elastomeric ring may be positioned between the body and an outer wall defined by each of the bayonets.”

This doesn’t confirm the aforementioned leak by any means, but it’s interesting to see how well these two fit together, much like the parts described in the invention itself.
