After Nokia, LG and HTC all equipped their smartphones with wireless charging tech, Apple will follow suit this year enabling similar functionality for its upcoming iPhone models.

Hit-and-miss industry publication DigiTimes cites the usual (anonymous) industry sources as saying that “Samsung Electronics and Apple are expected to add wireless charging capability to their flagship models in 2013 […]  following the steps of Nokia, LG Electronics and HTC.”

While Samsung is expected to employ Qi wireless charging technology backed by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) for the Galaxy S IV, Apple will use a technology developed internally, which seems to fit the company’s modus operandi.

However, “it remains unknown if the next-generation iPhone will come with built-in wireless charging capability or with other attached accessories,” the same sources reportedly noted.
