The screen is based on an oxide thin-film transistor (TFT)

LG Display, one of Apple’s primary suppliers for iPhone and iPad screens, is set to introduce a new panel which measures five inches on the diagonal and begs to be used in one of the upcoming iPhones.

Patently Apple reports that LG is introducing a 5-inch HD LCD display based on an oxide thin-film transistor (TFT) at a trade show, and that shipping will be available later this year.

With Apple itself is set to launch a new iPhone in the fall timeframe, all eyes are on a potentially bigger iPhone to combat Samsung’s onslaught of Android-powered smartphones and phablets.

Some pundits say Apple cannot afford another incremental upgrade this year, which could mean the iPhone 5S is not a certainty for 2013. However, should Apple cede to the 5-inch trend, the iPhone 6 will almost certainly use a display similar to LG’s new HD LCD product, if not the very same one.
