Huge demand causes Apple to delay shipping by a week in under an hour

The iPhone 5 shipping dates are already beginning to slip, with the Apple online store showing a two-week estimate on the arrival of your shiny new smartphone.

In less than an hour since Apple kicked off pre-orders for its next-generation handset, the shipping time plummeted from one week to two. It’s is not the first time this happens, and it’s not only the iPhone that does this with every new iteration, but the iPad too.

Customers looking to secure an iPhone through Apple right now can only buy a subsidized phone with a two-year carrier contract. Representatives for the Cupertino giant reportedly told The Verge that unlocked iPhone 5 units would go on sale in a few weeks.

Don’t be fooled, though. By putting off your purchase you have no guarantee that Apple will ship your iPhone faster than two weeks from now. It generally takes at least three weeks for the company to get a handle on orders. The fastest shipping you’ll get two weeks from now will probably be a week, or the same two weeks again.
