Apple discontinues iPhone 5 but still carries older-generation models

A new iPhone 4S 8GB model is now available from Apple for $0 with a two-year carrier contract. Apple is taking a similar approach in China, where it sells an 8GB iPhone 4 model for RMB 2588, or US$423, off contract.

Apple’s iPhone 5S and 5C announcements yesterday left many people wondering which older iPhones will continue to live on, and which won’t.

But the suspense didn’t last for very long, as Apple itself soon confirmed that the iPhone 5 would be discontinued, while the iPhone 4S would be kept as a free-on-contract version (with just 8GB of storage).

Perhaps more importantly, Apple continues to sell even its 2010 iPhone 4 in China, with a price point of RMB 2588 ($423), which makes it the cheapest iPhone ever sold by Apple.
