Sources in Taiwan are telling BrightWire (a business-to-business resource for portfolio managers) that AU Optronics is starting the first production stages of the next-generation iPad mini 2.

The investment news service cites sources with Apple’s Taiwan-based suppliers as saying on Sunday that “AU Optronics is piloting the production of the 7.9-inch iPad mini 2.”

The sources specifically said that the tablet’s display resolution and pixel density “stand at 2048x1536 pixels and 324ppi, respectively.” In other words, Apple is coming out with a Retina-enabled iPad mini.

Analysts speaking to sources in Apple’s supply chain in recent months pegged the iPad mini 2 launch around October 2013. Apple will supposedly launch a fifth-generation 9.7-inch iPad around the same time.

The iPad mini with Retina display should employ a faster processor, while the iPad 5 is said to take cues from its smaller sibling from a design standpoint.
