Score edges close to the 2x computing speed advertised by Apple

Everyone reviewing the new iPad Air has nothing but praise for the tablet, be it for its design, its lightweight body, its crisp display, or its processing power. And now we have some numbers to quantify just how fast the new iPad is.

According to some Geekbench 3 results published this week, the iPad Air is indeed almost twice as fast compared to its predecessor (iPad 4), as advertised by Apple.

Running at 1.4 GHz (100 MHz faster than the iPhone 5s' A7 processor), the iPad Air processor is undoubtedly wicked-fast. However, the extra speed may also be the result of a larger battery, a larger chassis (which provides better cooling), or a combination of both, according to John Poole of Primate Labs.

“The iPad Air is over 80% faster than the iPad (4th Generation), close to the 2x increase promised by Apple,” according to Poole.

Compared to the iPad 2, which uses Apple’s A5 chip, the iPad Air is over 5x faster.
