Developer Grant Paul (@chpwn), a contributor to the Cydia open source project, has released a screenshot via his Twitter feed to confirm that the fourth-generation iPad from Apple has been jailbroken.

“It doesn't look any different than on the iPad (3rd generation), but here's Cydia running on the iPad (4th generation),” reads a tweet from the developer of apps and extensions for jailbroken iOS devices.

Answering a follower’s question, chpwn clarified that the hack is “just meant for jailbreak developers to work on other jailbreaks.”

The screenshot above (click for full image) is clear evidence that hackers have been able to circumvent Apple’s security in iOS 6.0.1 on the A6X chip, the newest iDevice processor.

The news is most exciting for jailbreak fans, but the public release is probably still far off.

Members of the iPhone Dev Team and Chronic Dev Team are still working on achieving jailbreaks on even older devices, so you shouldn’t expect this one to come out anytime soon.
