iOS 7 last year was 15 points higher, iOS 8 bugs to blame

People continued to install and / or activate iOS 8 every day as we crossed into 2015, with Apple reporting that 68% of all iDevices out there are running the latest firmware.

This week, Apple put forth numbers according to which almost one third of iUsers are running the latest version of its mobile operating system. Specifically, some 68% of iPhone and iPad owners are now running iOS 8. The company doesn’t break down the figure by device type or device model, but it’s reasonable to assume that iPhones are mainly responsible.

It’s also worth noting that the monthly climb isn’t only attributed to new iOS 8 downloads (installations), but also to new device activations. In fact, the latter scenario is far more likely to be pushing iOS 8 forward, as most of the existing users have either installed the firmware, or decided that they never will (for personal or technical reasons).

iOS 7, by comparison, was at 83% around the same time last year. That’s a 15 percent gap likely caused by the rough start iOS 8 had – bugs and reported bricked devices that prompted users who hadn’t yet installed the software to take a wait-and-see stance.

iOS 8.1.2 is currently the newest version of the mobile OS powering iPhones and iPads worldwide, and Apple is known to be working on iOS 8.1.3 (likely packing fixes) and iOS 8.2 (likely featuring new stuff, not just code corrections).
