For one reason or another, Apple decided to patch other bugs

With the release of iOS 7.1.1 yesterday, many were hoping to see the Shift key issue addressed. As it turned out, the new firmware included fixes for a whole other range of bugs, some even affecting the virtual keyboard.

The release notes accompanying Apple’s release state, “This update contains improvements, bug fixes and security updates, including: further improvements to Touch ID fingerprint recognition; fixes a bug that could impact keyboard responsiveness; [and] fixes an issue when using Bluetooth keyboards with VoiceOver enabled.” The update also includes security patches.

It’s interesting to see how the Cupertino giant bothered to address one issue with the keyboard in iOS, but didn’t tweak the color of the shift key to make it less confusing for customers.

In addressing keyboard responsiveness, Apple would have required extensive testing across multiple device configurations, as well as perhaps tweaking more than one line of code in the underlying software. Yet the Shift key annoyance could easily be addressed with a simple color change. It would literally take minutes (probably less) to make the proper adjustments!

Available via iTunes or over-the-air (OTA), iOS 7.1.1 is for iPhone 4 or later, iPad 2 or later, iPad 2 or later, and iPod touch (5th generation).
