Hacker finds loophole in Apple’s apticket system, exploits it

iOS hacker iH8sn0w, also known as Steven, has managed to find a loophole in the latest iOS version which enabled him to downgrade his firmware against all odds.

Apple doesn’t allow firmware downgrades between major versions of its operating system, but iH8sn0w did it yesterday by exploiting a bug in iOS 5.1.

He explained on Twitter that he had “found a loophole in Apple's apticket system.” He added: “Restored my iPad 2 to 5.0.1 from 5.1. Works on all A5 devices.”

In other words, any iDevice that isn’t the new iPad can easily be downgraded from iOS 5.1 to iOS 5.0.1 (and perhaps even lower). This might come as wonderful news to the people whose iPhones started acting up after updating to iOS 5.1 - particularly on the battery front.
