Just slide the $3.79 sleeve over it and let it cool

A company called iCordRx is selling a small sleeve for Lightning cables that contracts after being heated up to protect the fry-prone ends. There’s just one small problem with it. Apparently, you need to dunk your cable in boiling water.

Apple’s charger cables have had a history of faultiness, and the Lightning cable that ships with the newest iPhones and iPads is no different. iCordRx aims to remedy the issue with a non-expensive sleeve that lets you strengthen and renew damaged Lightning charger cords, as well as toughen new cords.

The company claims it will take just a few easy steps to get the job done and that no special tools are required.

“Our iCordRx sleeve uses high performance aerospace adhesive technology to provide sealing of damaged charger cord jackets along with extended grip length to virtually eliminate future problems. Installation of the iCordRx on new cords is a great defense to protect your investment from damage,” says the U.S. firm.

Apparently, what you need to do is boil some water, slide the sleeve over your Lightning cable, position it, pinch it with tongs, and (here comes the questionable part) dunk it in the boiling water for 15 seconds, then remove it to allow the material to contract and secure the cable end. Needless to point out, you probably need to be very careful not to get any water underneath the sleeve before it contracts. I honestly can’t imagine this being safe.
