Security-aware Mac users who prefer the protection of a freeware solution should learn that avast! Free Antivirus 8.0 Build 39915 is now available for download featuring support for OS X Mavericks.

If you’re planning on making the jump to Apple’s next-generation Mac OS, you might want to consider countering potentially incoming malware with Avast! Free Antivirus 8.0 Build 39915, one of the first (if not the first) security solutions that cover the unreleased OS X Mavericks.

The system requirements have also changed. avast! Free Antivirus 8.0 Build 39915 requires OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard as minimum now.

A new program/VPS update mechanism is included, delivering support for silent program updates.

A clean installation can now be performed using a .pkg (installer package) “and not on the 1st run of the avast! GUI application,” according to the release notes.

As far as the Uninstall function is concerned, ALIWL Software says it can still be triggered from the GUI, or directly from the standalone utility bundled with the installer.
