It’s been a while since Cupertino last gave us this thrill

Apple has taken down its online store for maintenance, a move that used to signal new product refreshes (and sometimes even product launches). These days, it’s not as exciting.

I wouldn’t wish to sound melodramatic but, back when Steve Jobs was running the show, there was a tremendous amount of hype around that yellow sticky sign that read “We’ll be back.”

The sticky is now grey and, while it bears the same message, the hype is gone. The outages have become less and less frequent, and they generally end up with minor changes.

In fact, I dare not even hope predict any important update, such as a new MacBook Air model (with Retina display), or a refreshed Mac Pro (which has been begging for an upgrade for years). Let’s keep our fingers crossed nonetheless.

Update: Store's back up with predictably minor changes.
