“Singles Day” is open for at least two more China residents

There’s a tradition in China where singles go out and do stuff on November 11. It isn’t clear what it is that they’re supposed to do exactly, but we have a feeling it supports consumerism.

One guy decided he would honor the festivity no more this year. He reportedly went out and bought 99 iPhones worth two years of his salary, placed them on the sidewalk in the shape of a heart, and called out his girlfriend to propose to her inside the heart. Sadly, she said no

We don’t have all the facts unfortunately, but the scarce reports on China’s Sina Weibo (a Twitter-of-sorts in the country) say that she ultimately refused. The photos seem to suggest that the moment wasn’t well planned.

You probably need to be a woman to fully understand what goes on during these moments, but having to say “yes” in a parking lot, in broad daylight, with a bunch of people circling your heart-shaped iPhone construction like cannibals probably isn’t the best way you want to answer a proposal.

Not that I don’t admire anyone courageous enough to just ask someone on a date, let alone propose. But there’s something about these photos that sends a non-romantic vibe. Then again, she probably just wasn’t ready for commitment. What do you guys think? Share your thoughts in the comments.
