It all has to do with filters, not the increased pixel density

A demonstration by Jeff Yurek of Dot Color aims to explain why the new iPad’s screen shows much richer colors than its predecessor, the iPad 2.

It all has to do with Apple improving the color filters, says Jeff - not the increased pixel density, as many would have imagined.

He analyzed several spectrum charts and concluded that Apple limited the light leakage by improving the filters. A comparison is shown between the iPad 2 and the iPad 3 (above). The iPad 2 shows a washed out blue compared to a richer blue on the newer tablet.

“Leakage like this happens because its [sic] very difficult to make a truly perfect color filter and even harder to make one that is efficient enough for a mobile display,” says Jeff.
