Retailer slashes prices on current-generation hardware

Although most people expect Apple to announce the all-new iPhone 6 at an event in September, speculation is already mounting that the Cupertino giant might release it earlier than expected.

American retailer Walmart has announced a surprise deal on current-generation iPhones, slashing their prices, in what can suggest that it has been tipped off to deplete inventory.

Acquired with a two-year wireless contract, a 16GB iPhone 5s now sells for $99 (€72) down from $149 (€109), while the unapologetic iPhone 5c goes for just $29 (€21) down from $49 (€36).

Also worth noting is that the offer doesn’t apply to online purchases, so you’ll need to waltz into your local Walmart to take advantage of the deal.

If you were to ask us, Walmart is simply proceeding with a planned price cut and may very well slash its prices again in the weeks leading up to the iPhone 6 announcement, which shouldn’t occur for the next two-three months.

The reason for this is simple: iOS 8. Apple said it would be released in fall, and there’s no reason to believe it will launch the update before announcing the new phone. In fact, iOS 8 likely has a few aces up its sleeve that take advantage of key hardware features in the iPhone 6. Both products should be taken as one.
