Only some users have so far reported luck in downloading and installing the new version, binary not yet in the App Store

VideoLAN has finally released VLC for iOS back into the wild. According to some users, a new update is available for download in their Updates queue in the App Store, but the binary itself is nowhere to be found if you’re looking to download fresh.

At least not yet, anyway. According to TheTigerMaster on Reddit, VLC for iOS 2.4.1 (build 1) is now up for grabs for those with an older copy of VLC for iOS installed.

The player got pulled last year for unknown reasons around the time iOS 8 made its debut. It was later revealed that the retraction had something to do with software licensing, a problem that has plagued VLC for iOS in the past.

We tested out the “update” method and unfortunately couldn’t find the listing anywhere. Apparently, the rollout is slow and takes a while to reach everyone. Searching for VLC in the App Store also doesn’t yield the official binary. All you can find is sidekick apps or alternatives to the VideoLAN-developed player.

We’ll issue an update when the official app makes it back into the App Store. In the meantime, you can join the discussion below, or on Reddit at the link supplied a few paragraphs above.
